How can church policies prevent clergy abuse?

On Behalf of | Sep 11, 2026 | Clergy Abuse

In order to prevent abuse by clergy members, churches can use specific policies that apply to both staff and membership.

For instance, if anyone is going to be working with children or minors, the church may have a screening and training process. They may reach out to references, conduct interviews or even carry out a background check.

Even when a person passes this background check and seems like a good fit, they can also be given training regarding how they should relate to children or other church members. This can help them recognize red flags present in other staff members, as well as know how to conduct themselves. Training is often done on an annual basis, or at least every three to five years, with children’s ministries often conducting this training more often.

Safety policies

On top of training, the church can have policies in place that help to prevent abuse. One common policy is a two-adult rule. No adult should have time alone with church members who are minors. There should always be two people present, and they can help to hold each other accountable.

Additionally, if there are accusations of abuse or inappropriate conduct, the two-adult rule means that someone else may have witnessed this event. They can give firsthand testimony regarding what took place.

Addressing abuse within the church

Training and policies can certainly lower the odds of abuse within a church or religious institution, but these types of events do still happen. Victims and family members, such as parents of a victim who is a minor, do need to know what legal steps they can take when such a situation arises.
