When a priest uses confession to hide sexual abuse

On Behalf of | Sep 29, 2026 | Clergy Abuse

Close relationships with clergy members can lead to sexual abuse. Both young people and adults are vulnerable due to the power dynamic that exists between a parishioner and their priest. People also tend to trust priests, meaning they do not expect to face mistreatment and abuse.

There have been reports of Catholic priests using the sacrament of reconciliation, specifically one-on-one confession, as a means of engaging in sexual abuse. People who have experienced this form of misconduct may need to report the matter and consider taking legal action.

How does confession lead to abuse?

A one-on-one conversation with a priest about misconduct that violates the catechism or Biblical precepts can be deeply personal. People confess their mortal and venial sins seeking absolution, which then allows them to continue attending church and receiving communion.

There have been reports of priests guiding the confession process to extract details from people for their own sexual gratification or even engaging in self-stimulation during confessions. There have been allegations of priests requesting inappropriate forms of penance from people during confession.

There have also been claims that those within the church hierarchy reported their misconduct in the confines of the confessional so as to invoke the strict religious precept of absolute confidentiality and avoid any legal repercussions. Particularly in cases where there is reason to believe that others within the church hierarchy were aware of abuse or where a priest engaged in directly abusive behaviors related to the sacrament of reconciliation, people may have grounds to take legal action.

Filing a civil lawsuit is one option for seeking justice when clergy members abuse their authority. People who experience misconduct when attempting to repair their relationship with God through confession are often in a strong position to fight back against that kind of abuse of power through the legal system.
