First steps to take as a victim of a car or truck accident

A car or truck accident can be shocking and stressful, especially in the moments right after it happens. Accidents involving trucks may be more complex due to vehicle size, potential injuries, and insurance issues.

Knowing what to do can help you stay safe, protect your health and reduce confusion during an already difficult situation.

1. Check for injuries and prioritize safety

Your first concern should always be health and safety. Check yourself and others for injuries and call emergency services if anyone is hurt. Even if injuries seem minor, seek medical attention as soon as possible since some symptoms may appear later. Follow medical advice carefully and keep all related records.

2. Contact law enforcement and request a report

Calling law enforcement helps create an official record of the accident. Provide clear and factual information about what occurred without guessing or placing blame. Ask how to obtain a copy of the accident report once it is completed.

Collect names, phone numbers, vehicle details and insurance information from all drivers involved. In truck accidents, also note the company name and any visible identification on the vehicle. If there are witnesses, ask for their contact details as well.

3. Document the accident scene

Use your phone to take photos of vehicle damage, road conditions, traffic signs and the surrounding area. Capture images from multiple angles and write down what you remember about the accident while details are still fresh, including time, location and events leading up to the collision.

4. Notify your insurance provider promptly

Report the accident to your insurance company as soon as you are able. Provide accurate information and share any photos or report numbers available. Keep records of all communication, claim numbers and related expenses such as towing or medical costs.

5. Keep organized records and seek support

Maintain a single file with medical records, repair estimates, receipts and correspondence. Organization helps prevent delays and confusion later and if the process feels overwhelming or disputes arise, seeking legal guidance can help you understand your options and protect your rights during recovery.
