What is seat belt syndrome?

On Behalf of | Jul 17, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Being in a motor vehicle without putting on your seat belt is taking a big risk. In fact, less than 10% of people forgo their seat belts, but 50% of those killed in car accidents are unrestrained.

However, seat belts are also the source of numerous serious intestinal injuries. In fact, the term “seat belt syndrome” is used to describe a loose group of internal injuries that are associated with the use of safety restraints.

Common injuries associated with seat belt syndrome

When seat belts prevent the occupants of motor vehicles from being thrown forward into the vehicle’s dashboard or windshield, the force exerted on the human body in the process can cause internal damage. These injuries can range from mild to severe and may include:

  • Abdominal injuries: The abrupt compression from the seat belt across a victim’s midsection can bruise their liver, damage their spleen and cause tears in the small intestine. Life-threatening complications are possible.
  • Chest injuries: Bruising of the lungs from the force of impact can lead to breathing problems. Rib fractures are also very possible, and broken ribs can lead to punctured lungs.
  • Spinal damage: These are particularly common in the lumbar spine, and discs in the back can easily be displaced or ruptured. That can lead to chronic pain, numbness and weakness in the victim’s legs and chronic pain.

The worst part about seat belt syndrome is that many victims feel fine, initially. They may notice a slight soreness or some bruising where the seat belt crossed their body, but the real symptoms don’t set in until later.

Car accident victims need to be wary of abdominal pain that persists or worsens following the wreck, chest pain, back pain, nausea and vomiting, and dark bruises that could indicate internal bleeding. Prompt medical treatment could save their lives.

If you or your loved one suffers injuries in a wreck, legal guidance can help you understand the other party’s liability and your legal options.
