Interstate 49, otherwise known as I-49, is a huge trucking corridor that connects many parts of our state. Unfortunately, with the increased amount of 18-wheelers on our roads, the danger of truck accidents, even fatal truck accidents, increases. Unfortunately, two people, including a 6-year-old were recently killed just outside of our parish.

The accident

According to Louisiana State Police, the I-49 accident occurred Thursday before 8:00 p.m., slightly north of the Natchitoches Parish line. An 18-wheeler was traveling northbound when it, for unknown reasons, fell down a nearby embankment and overturned.

The driver, and two passengers, including the child, were ejected from the truck’s cabin. Unfortunately, both passengers died on the scene as first responders where not able to save their lives.

The fatal truck accident is still under investigation, and police are still seeking witnesses. Unfortunately, it is not known what caused the truck to leave the road, who is at fault or whether there was another vehicle involved.

Wrongful death

Once the investigation is complete, we will know who is at fault. And, whoever is at fault will be responsible for the deaths of the two passengers. While the criminal justice system will undoubtedly prosecute for those deaths, the civil justice system can also be used to help families gain a sense of justice as well.

Through a wrongful death lawsuit, the families of the victims can sue the responsible parties. The money that is recouped will never bring these two back, but it can help the family members left behind. But, the first step is contacting an attorney.
